TOUR BY CAMPERVAN: One way to experience New Zealand is touring by campervan. Minimum hire is 7 days and pick up locations are usually Christchurch or Auckland. A 14 day minimum hire is required if picking up in Auckland and dropping off in Christchurch or vice versa. A combination holiday part self-drive by car and part by campervan gives an interesting perspective to the holiday. Different size campervans cater for between 2-6 persons and are well equipped with shower/toilet, LCD/DVD, gas stove, fridge and microwave. It is straightforward to book ahead at the many campsites available and gives one a sense of true independence. No previous experience is required and a detailed handover is given at pick up.
ESALA PERAHERA SRI LANKA: The Esala Perahera in Kandy is one of the oldest and grandest of all Buddhist festivals in Sri Lanka and is renowned as one of the most spectacular religious processions in Asia. It lasts 10 days and features dancers, jugglers, musicians, fire-breathers and lavishly decorated elephants.
The festival dates back to the 4th century AD and celebrates the Tooth Relic, one of Buddhism's most venerated objects. Said to be a tooth from the mouth of the Buddha himself, it was rescued from his funeral pyre in north India and eventually brought to Sri Lanka in the 4th century AD. The Tooth Relic now resides in the Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Tooth), one of Buddhism's most revered pilgrimage sites.
The festival is considered to be one of the most beautiful pageants in Asia with dozens of elephants brightly dressed and decked out with miniature lights accompanied by stilt-walkers and flag-waving retainers. The biggest cheer is reserved for the mighty Maligawa Tusker, the biggest and most brilliantly dressed of the elephants on view. A bright white linen carpet is unfurled before him so that his feet do not touch the ground and during the procession the relic sits within its golden box atop his back.
