INTREPID TRAVEL AND DISTANT HORIZONS

Distant Horizons is the local representative in Malta for Intrepid Travel, an international tour operator founded in 1989 specialising in small-group travel. Their trips focus on authentic local experiences and using local guides who really know their countries. They place strong emphasis on responsible and sustainable travel, supporting local communities while offering travellers meaningful, well-organised experiences rather than mass tourism. We are proud to have represented them since 2017.

As Intrepid Travel’s local representative in Malta, Distant Horizons can help with:

• choosing the right Intrepid trip for your interests, travel style and budget

• practical travel-planning advice before you book

• access to Intrepid’s worldwide range of small-group adventures

• personal support from a real local contact in Malta

• the reassurance of dealing with someone locally, rather than only through an online booking path

Intrepid structures its itineraries into four main trip styles. Each style offers a different balance of budget, comfort, and included activities, allowing you to choose how you want to experience a destination. Basic Trips Focus: Budget-friendly flexibility and independent exploration. Accommodation: Simple, clean guesthouses, budget hotels, or homestays. Transport: Primarily public buses, trains, or rickshaws to travel like a local. Inclusions: Covers essential highlights, leaving plenty of free time to choose your own activities and meals. Original Trips Focus: The classic, steady-paced Intrepid experience. Accommodation: Standard tourist-class hotels and immersive cultural stays. Transport: A mix of local public transit and private vehicles. Inclusions: More group activities, guided tours, and local meals are built into the price. Comfort Trips Focus: A more relaxed, slower pace that smooths out travel's rougher edges. Accommodation: Higher-quality, comfortable hotels with more amenities. Transport: Primarily private, air-conditioned vehicles. Inclusions: Most daily activities and meals are covered, leaving less guesswork. Premium Trips Focus: High-end, sustainable adventures with exceptional service. Accommodation: Top-rated properties and memorable, historic "Feature Stays". Transport: Private vehicles and high-convenience transit. Inclusions: Fully packed itineraries with daily curated experiences, signature tours, and exclusive activities. Specialty Themes Beyond these four core styles, Intrepid also designs targeted itineraries based on specific interest themes: Family: Tailored activities and pacing built for parents travelling with children. Food: Immersive culinary experiences focusing on regional cooking and local markets. 18-to-35s: Fast-paced, social adventures designed specifically for younger travellers. Short Breaks: Action-packed 4-to-6-day itineraries designed for time-pressed travellers.

As the world continues to grapple with over tourism, you may be rethinking where and how to travel in 2026. Back in 2018, Intrepid launched their inaugural Not Hot List, designed to help spread the benefits of tourism more widely and unveil some of the under-the-radar destinations that are ready for more attention. This year's Not Hot List, features 10 lesser-known destinations ready to welcome more visitors in 2026.

There are also a number of new premium trips to Greenland, Costa Rica, the Norwegian fjords and Scandinavia besides a number of new basic trips to Egypt, Costa Rica, Thailand and Turkey which are extremely good value for money.

There are three new women's-only expeditions to Bhutan, Cambodia and Peru, new multi-active and cycling trips, premium walking trips trips in Europe, North and Central Asia, as well as new rail trips in countries like Canada, Kenya, China, Sweden and Malaysia

These are just the new trips. The choice is huge with over a thousand tours worldwide, most with many departure dates, so you can tailor the trip to fit your schedule.
