Think of THE MALDIVES and what comes to mind...Cyan blue water seen almost nowhere else in the world, stunning sandy beaches, palm fringed islands, amazing resorts and wondrous underwater sea life. There are over 100 private islands with their own amazing resorts. Divers, snorkelers and water sports enthusiasts are in their element as are the sun worshippers and those who just want to relax in idyllic surroundings.

But there is another side to the Maldives which is much less known and one could say this is the 'real' Maldives. You can spend some time on an island inhabited by locals in a guest house, experience colourful local life and try islander food in a traditional part of the world few people get to see. You can see the country through the eyes of the locals and experience daily life travelling by public ferry, share breakfast with a family in their home, exchange stories, and relax with a coffee in a local bar. Of course snorkelling or Scuba diving can still be included! An added benefit of this type of holiday is that the local community benefit directly.

Maldives may be regarded as quite an expensive destination, especially when staying at some of the resorts on the private islands. Our travel suggestions can certainly make a Maldives holiday much more affordable. Having said that we would still  highly recommend that you  stay at one of the luxury resorts after your local island get away :-)

Mauritius

MAURITIUS The very name conjures up images of cobalt-blue seas, white sandy beaches, swaying palms…you can almost feel yourself wriggling your toes in anticipation. Mauritius boasts endless sugar-cane plantations, dramatic mountains, volcanic lakes, waterfalls, tea plantations, coral reefs and some of the finest beaches and aquamarine lagoons in the Indian Ocean. According to Mark Twain, Mauritius was made first and then heaven and that heaven was copied after Mauritius. However Mauritius is far more than just a beach destination with endless activities to keep you occupied, woe betide anyone who says that there is nothing to do…

EXPERIENCE: underwater sea walks, diving, skydiving, safari quad biking, zip-lining, hiking in the Black River Gorges National Park, strolling through the Botanical Gardens at Pamplemousses, Walking with Lions at the Yemen Reserve, hunting for bargains in the downtown market in Port Louis, Via Ferrata, horse riding, windsurfing, day trip to the nature reserve of Ile aux Aigrettes, swim with dolphins or even join a cooking class and try your hand at preparing a Mauritian curry.

SUGGESTED COMBINATIONS: Search for the lemurs in Madagascar or the Big Five on a safari in South Africa. A city stay in bustling Kuala Lumpur or Dubai would be interesting add-ons or a side trip to romantic Paris. Or perhaps head to the Maldives to relax completely after your adventures in Mauritius? At Distant Horizons we can easily organise such an itinerary.
